Family law is more than just about the outcome of a case. It is about protecting what matters most to our clients. Day Family Law, PLLC, provides effective advocacy and guidance to help you make the right decisions for you and your family.
Born in New Orleans, Mike got to Texas as quickly as he could when his father, an Exxon lifer, was transferred to the Houston area. Mike attended the University of Texas at Austin, was a member of the Liberal Arts Honors Program, and graduated with a degree in History in 2002. He then attended South Texas College of Law-Houston, where he received a Dean’s Honors Scholarship to attend. During law school, he learned a great deal about trial advocacy and was a highly involved member of the nationally recognized moot court program.
Mike began his legal career by serving as a small-town felony prosecutor. A month into the job, his first jury trial was a murder trial. In addition to managing an active felony docket, Mike was also responsible for obtaining protective orders on behalf of victims of domestic violence. Mike then found his way to working for the Texas Attorney General, where he defended medical providers and other state employees in civil lawsuits throughout the State of Texas, in both state and federal court and at the trial and appellate levels. After meeting his future wife, Mike moved to Houston in 2008 and began to focus his practice on family law.
From 2008 through the present, Mike has successfully represented family law clients in jury trials, bench trials, arbitrations, depositions, mediations, appeals, and hearings. In 2021, Mike became Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. This is a distinction held by less than 1% of licensed attorneys in the State of Texas.
In addition to his private practice, Mike serves as the Marital Property and Homestead Reporter of the Real Estate, Probate, and Trust Litigation of the State Bar of Texas. This role requires Mike to offer quarterly reports to estate planning, probate, and real estate attorneys throughout Texas in which he summarizes the most cutting-edge cases regarding the intersection of characterization (i.e., whether property is community property or separate property) with trusts, inheritance, business valuation, and real estate issues. Not only does Mike enjoy the intellectual challenge of high net worth divorce, but he also has a passion for family law matters involving children with special needs.
Mike also serves as the CLE Subcommittee Co-Chair for the Business Law Section of the State Bar of Texas. In this capacity, Mike stays connected with how transactional attorneys and commercial litigators maintain their legal knowledge and improve their craft. Mike also serves as the Professionalism Committee Co-Chair for the Houston Bar Association. Few attorneys in Texas are Board Certified in Family Law and maintain this level of interdisciplinary acumen.
Beginning in 2017, Mike began to take leadership roles in the Family Bar. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Gulf Coast Family Law Specialists and the Burta Rhoads Rabor Family Law Inn of Court. He previously served on the Board of Directors of the Family Law Section of the Houston Bar Association and as a Team Leader in the Burta Rhoads Raborn Family Law Inn of Court. This means that Mike is currently serving or has served on the Boards of all three major family law organizations in Houston.
Lastly, Mike also won the 2017 Outstanding Article Award from the Houston Bar Foundation for his article examining unresolved issues involving same-sex marriage, as well as the 2017 Individual Volunteer of the Year Award at the Harris County Pro Bono Bench Bar Conference. In 2023, Mike began serving on the Civil Legal Services for the Poor Committee of the State Bar of Texas. Mike is a fellow in both the Houston Bar Foundation and the Texas Bar Foundation. When he is not practicing law, Mike enjoys spending time with his family, reading, and traveling.
